Welcome
to Eagle Design Center at 197 Main Street in Dubuque's Old
Main Historic District.
September
15, 2004
How utterly
perfect! Take a building that's 140 years old, restore its
19th Century era facade, and fill the retail space (two floors)
with products from one of our best and brightest manufacturers
in Dubuque, Eagle Window and Door. This combination of ingredients
in Dubuque's incredibly popular Old Main Street Historic District
is just so right. The Dubuque Ambassadors were on hand with
the independent owners of the retail design center, as were
officials from the plant that is their only supplier, Eagle
Window and Door on Kerper Blvd. This is one of a growing number
of Eagle retail stores or "design centers" as they
are called, to help consumers with replacement windows as
well as windows for new construction, additions, and remodelling
enterprises. What is also wonderful about the location for
this store is that its owners chose the Downtown District.
They could very easily have leased available space on Dubuque's
Westend, but they didn't. Considering the amount of traffic
the lower Main Street area is getting, especially from visitors
from out of town on a typical weekend, the location for this
facility was brilliant. They will reach so many more people
thereby furthering the Eagle Window and Door brand.

Greeting
the Performers of the Children's Palace of Tianjin, People's
Republic of China
September
3, 2004
Things
have relaxed a bit for citizens of The People's Republic of
China according to the Dubuque Ambassador and Chinese interpreter,
Dick Landis. Dick accompanied the visiting students of The
Children's Palace, a school of music and dance that had sent
its talented young ambassadors to America and Iowa in particular
as part of a state sponsored exchange of business and culture
called "Sister States." Dick, who speaks Chinese
exceedingly well thanks to several years in that region when
he served in the US armed forces, accompanied the students
on a tour of the city, the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium,
and he helped during their performance at Washington Junior
High on September 1st. Dubuque Ambassadors were on hand to
greet the students officially on behalf of the Chamber of
Commerce and the City of Dubuque. The movie that accompanies
this story is utterly charming. It features the Ambassadorial
greeting at the Mississippi River Museum and clips from their
performance at Washington Junior High that evening.
Even
though Dick was available to interpret for the students, it
was apparent that some of them knew English and were eager
to try out their skills on virtually everyone they met. Ambassador
Mike Pratt (local real estate agent and performing magician)
demonstrated a coin trick on one of the students, and an audible
"Thank you," came the response from one young boy
who got to keep the quarter that was miraculously pulled from
behind his ear by the "Magic Pratt."
There
is an interview with Dick Landis and some clips from their
performance on the video that runs 10 minutes. The costumes
are beautiful as is the dancing.

Cutting for DB&T's New Offices in Dubuque's Westend District
August 24, 2004
It rained
a little, but it was not enough to dampen enthusiasm for the
exciting grand opening of Dubuque Bank & Trust's new offices
in Dubuque's Westend District at the corner of Asbury and
Northwest Arterial. The bank lobby was packed to the from
the Loan Department to the teller windows. A delicious buffet
was served, and fun was obviously had by all. Can you imagine
a customer (unknowing of the event taking place) coming in
to deposit a check? Now this is banking! I'll take a receipt
and a chicken wing please. The facility is superbly designed
and evokes the architectural style of the original bank building
on Central Avenue. Our own School Board President and President
and CEO of Dubuque Bank and Trust, Doug Horstmann, is interviewed
on this movie by Dubuque Ambassador Gary Olsen. And the lovely
and talented Carol Townsend, President of the Dubuque Area
Chamber of Commerce, is the master of ceremonies. Click on

Ground
Breaking for Star Cinema's Theater
August 23, 2004
By next
spring, a new theater will be opening west of Dubuque in Asbury
(to the right of Kohl's)... about the time George Lucas' newest
Star Wars episode is scheduled to premier. The Prairie Du
Chien based AGT Enterprises, owned by the William Adamany
family (Bill Sr. and Bill Jr.), will open their ninth Star
Cinema in the Midwest. It will be a wonder to behold with
14 screens, stadium seating, digital surround sound, and a
lobby so spectacular (a hand painted domed mural is in the
plans) you may just want to hang out at the state-of-the-art
snackbar and skip the feature. The interior design is a combination
of retro styles evocative of those Egyptian-styled theaters
of the golden age of movie houses. Today, theaters have become
much more sophisticated entertainment venues. Watch this video
clip that contains interviews with the owners, and help the
Ambassadors celebrate this exciting new development and a
new golden age of movie houses of the high-tech total family
entertainment variety. Cinematographer on this shoot is
Torry Sipp, Clarke College Communication Student and talented
producer.

Panera
Bread
July, 2004
This
has been discussed among Panera executives (home base St.
Louis) and regional managers for a long time, apparently.
But according to Panera officials on hand for the ground
breaking ceremonies on JFK Road in Dubuque, "Our timing
couldn't be better with Dubuque's resurgent economy."
It won't be long and we'll be having Panera Bread Bowls of
the soup de jour (do they make a bread spoon?) and taking
home sacks of rolls and pastries (Atkins be damned... Dubuquers
love bread). Panera is a large and growing franchise, and
a local boy who went off to work for them, Brian McGrath,
is coming back to his home town to manage the local store.
Meet him and learn more about this exciting company by watching
this excellent video (about 6 minutes long). Incidentally,
what do you think of a big national franchise joining the
Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce before they even turn a shovel
of earth for the store? Way to go Panera! They apparently
know what side of the bread the butter is on.

Advance
Auto Parts at 32nd and Central
July, 2004
A
fascinating place a brand new auto parts store is. There
are neat rows upon rows of car consumables... oil, lubricants,
automobile and truck accessories of every size shape and description.
And in proximity of the check out register are the obligatory
snack foods (a pound of cashews was a little more than 4 bucks
on this Grand Opening day. Add a Slim Jim and a 20 oz. Pepsi
to that, and we have lunch). The fact that a large portion
of Americans still prefer to do much of their own service
(while snacking apparently) on their own vehicles is not lost
on this growing chain of stores that now has two locations
in Dubuque. This one, on 32nd and Central Avenue (locals always
refer to this North End hub as 32nd and Central rather than
the other way around), and their other store in the West End
District on Kennedy Rd. We spoke to the manager, Don Stark,
who has been with the company for several years. He said the
chain has been looking at this North End site for a while
because it serves not just the people who live on the north
side of Dubuque, but all of the northern communities will
be served as well... Sageville, Durango, Rickardsville, Balltown,
Buena Vista, and Holy Cross. Join the Ambassadors as we cut
the ribbon on this
brand new Advance Auto Parts Store.

Cafe
Mana Java, on Main Street in Dubuque, celebrated a ribbon
cutting event this month, and the whole event was downright
tasty! Georgia and Michelle Mihalakis (right) are the owners
of this lovely establishment dedicated to quality, wholesome
bakery goods, sandwiches and fabulous wood-roast pizza.
|
Cafe
Mana Java on Dubuque's Lower Main Street
April 2004
It's
already become a magnet in the lower Main Street area of town,
and the Ambassadors were there to celebrate their success.
Cafe Mana Java specializes in gourmet breads and bakery goods,
but their wood-roast pizzas, grilled sandwiches and aromatic
soups are putting the Mihalakis sisters, Michelle and Georgia,
on the map of great eating establishments in the Tri-States.
What's also wonderful about this business is the atmosphere,
the restored building (the original Cooper Wagon Works), friendly
service, entertainment featuring local musicians, a rotating
display of local artists' works, and the originality and continuously
improving menu of product offerings, have put Cafe Mana Java
on track for culinary and cultural landmark status in our
city.

Redcoats
Witness Historic Ceremony for New Junior High School
April 23,
2004
A new
junior high will be built on Radford Road on the city's western
edge, among the fastest growing areas in the State of Iowa.
On hand was the Dubuque School Board, Dubuque Community School
District administrators, teachers, neighbors, the original
land owners, the Siegert family, members of local and state
government, at least two members of the press, and our own
Dubuque Ambassador Red Coats. Interesting to note, this new
school, financed through the local option sales tax that was
passed by voters, is the first public works project of its
kind in more than 30 years. It represents a $30 million investment
in education and will serve the community for the next several
decades. It is a sure sign that Dubuque is on the grow.

Salsa's
Mexican Restaurant
April, 2004
As Ambassador
Jack LeBlond says on the front of this intimate little video
clip, "Authentic Mexican Cuisine." So true. This
restaurant becomes another jewel in the downtown crown of
restaurants in Dubuque that span a growing list of ethnic
flavors. The opening of Salsa's helps celebrate the renaissance
of our Downtown District as a place for food, fun, music,
the arts, and culture of all kinds.

NICC
Childhood Development Center
April, 2004
What
a wonderful story. NICC, among the fastest growing institutions
of higher learning in the state, raised funds and financial
assistance to build a day care facility, but not just any
ordinary day care facility, but a true "early child development"
center. What a great addition to the campus. The facility
serves two purposes. First, it takes care of children with
a curriculum based pre-school program. Second, it provides
a learning lab facility for students who wish to become trained
and certified as early childhood development careerists. It's
a lovely facility and... well... you'll just have to view
the video.

Lange
Sign Group
April, 2004
Though
this company is new in Dubuque, the people behind it (the
Lange family) have had several years in the on premise sign
business going back to 1956 when patriarch Harold Lange, went
to work for Frank Hardie Advertising. Some of Harold's children
followed their father into the business, working for Frank
Hardie which spun off Larry Weitz Sign Systems, and now, the
Lange family owns their own sign business and their family
name is on the building out at Tammarack Park southwest of

Dubuque Savings Bank's New Location on Cedar Cross Road
May 3, 2004
The oldest
bank in the Tri-State Area has been growing steadily in recent
years and has added another location for the convenience of
their customers. A striking building evocative of Frank Lloyd
Wright's Prairie Style architecture, the bank is filled with
the best works of local artists, painters, potters and print
makers (EDSB has one of the most inspiring and extensive collection
of works by regional artists). The Ambassador gang assembled
early in the morning on a lovely day in May to help EDSB cut
the red ribbon and usher in customers at this great new Cedar
Cross Road location.

Dan
Kruse BMW on Century Drive in Dubuque
May 11, 2004
Dan Kruse
and his staff with the help of customers, friends, family
and the Dubuque Chamber Ambassadors, open the newest dealership
facility in Dubuque, Dan Kruse BMW on Century Drive, located
just behind long-standing Dan Kruse Pontiac, Nissan, BMW.
As BMW popularity and ownership numbers have increased in
the Tri-State Area (thanks to Dan and company), Dan Kruse
earned the confidence of BMW North America to establish a
more comprehensive sales and service facility. The showroom
is one of the largest in the area. The new cars sparkeld like
jewels in the late afternoon sun that flooded the showroom.
Dan's
opening was very fitting for a performance/luxury car dealer.
One of the best caterers in town was hired to provide the
food with a distinctive Bavarian flavor. The sausages and
sauerkraut were delectable as was the beef tenderloin on open-face
German rye. And the Matterhorn made of stacked cream puffs
was a monument to the culinary art.
And then
there are the cars. BMW builds the most sought after, classically
stylish and most technically innovative vehicles in the world.
Perhaps the presence of a BMW dealership of this caliber says
something about Dubuque as a durable economy, or maybe we've
become a more viable retail center for the purchase
of durable goods. In either case, join the Dubuque Chamber
Ambassadors as we clip a ribbon, kick some tires, and enjoy
some fabulous food.

Super
Ambassador Day
In the span
of two days in June 2004, Ambassadors attended four events,
three in one day! We started our day at the Dubuque Greyhound
Park and the Dedication of their new Expansion and Remodeling
project. Then we went to Prudential Financial for their ribbon
cutting at noon. In the afternoon we attended the grand opening
of River City Gifts on lower Main Street. Our fourth event
was the grand opening of Mission Creative on 9th Street. We
combined all of these events in one video that is approximately
40 minutes in length.
The
Dubuque Racing Association just broke ground on a multi-million
dollar expansion program that will not just add space to their
casino, but it also includes extensive remodeling that will
add character to what has become a landmark in the Dubuque
area.
Prudential
Financial's retirement plan administration division (formerly
CIGNA) is in Downtown Dubuque. Prudential acquired CIGNA this
past year. John Kim, the division manager of this growing
firm, makes some excellent comments and provides some useful
perspective on this important community asset.
River
City Gifts now occupies the venerable Webber Building
on lower Main. Teri and her husband, Bill Burdt have take
their artform, sculpted, hand cast and hand painted replicas
of Dubuque landmarks, and expanded it to include a lovely
gift shop featuring everything from gourmet items and local
wine to collectibles, dolls, unusual gifts, and wearables.
The facility now is home to the Burdt's art studio where they
will be making and teaching pottery.
Finally,
Mission Creative, a full-service media design firm,
has evolved from Get Smart Design, the award winning
firm founded by now Creative Director, Jeff McFarland. Mission
Creative is now part of the Woodward Communication organization
(Telegraph Herald) and they provide turnkey service
for all things graphic, from print to multimedia and web.

Municipal
Services Center Ground Breaking
July, 2004
The
Municipal Services Center, which will serve as a city equipment
deployment and maintenance facility broke ground on a
Kerper Court site on what was a rather blighted section of
land on the old Industrial Peninsula. It not only will become
a much needed facility for Municipal Services of Dubuque,
but it helps reclaim a strategic portion of river area property.
Join the Ambassadors as we witness another historic ground
breaking for the City of Dubuque.

The
Point Restaurant and Lounge on Rhomberg Ave.
February 20, 2004
What
a fabulous place! This restaurant will no doubt be popular
with the Dubuque tourists and locals alike. What a great location....
drawing a large lunch-hour crowd from Kerper Blvd. and, of
course, it's becoming popular with the neighborhood folks. This
restaurant is destined to become an icon in the Point District.
The Point Restaurant and Lounge used to be the Point Drive-In
(next to Dairy Queen). When it came up for sale, Randy Klauer
just had to have it. Join the new owner Randy and his crew
as we cut the ribbon on this newly opened establishment on
Rhomberge Avenue.

Henry's
Pub in the lower level of the Rountree Restaurant in Platteville
January
2003
Members
of the Dubuque Ambassadors and the Dubuque Area Chamber of
Commerce were invited to Platteville, Wisconsin by the Platteville
Chamber of Commerce to join in the celebration of the grand
reopening of Henry's Pub. It was a neat example of how important
it is for us to promote each other (Dubuque and Platteville)
as a total destination. Combined we offer many more features
for visitors, and many businesses in the area realize this
hence we have more than a few dual memberships among area
businesses in Wisconsin and Illinois. Click on the movie button
and let's visit Henry's Pub, resurrected watering hole that
is sure to be a popular spot. It's located on the main highway
alongside the Park Hotel and is the lower level of Platteville's
famed Rountree Restaurant.

The
West End Dubuque Water Tower Dedication
December
1, 2003
Isn't
it nice to be able to say to anyone who will listen, especially
out of town relatives, "Dubuque has the best water in
the U.S!"? Well, it's true. Maybe we should bottle and
sell it and create a revenue stream for the city. What do
you think? In any event, as the city grows and improves its
services to citizens and businesses, a West End water tower
was inevitable, and here we have the dedication. Learn a few
things about where our water comes from an how it's managed.
Running time about 6 minutes.

Buy Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
November
2003
Hold
on to your hat and grab your credit card. This is going to
be a roof raiser as ribbon cuttings go. This is the most motivated
group of employees we've ever seen as the Ambassadors help
in unveil this long-awaited electronics and technology superstore.
This video reveals more than just the store's interior and
wonderful people. On this occasion, Best Buy employees made
a $10,000 donation to our local United Way campaign right
off the bat! Talk about relationship building and getting
off to a great start with the community!

The
Grand River Center Grand Opening and Dedication
October
2003
Clarke
College's Communication Department Multimedia Lab produced
this excellent video highlighting the grand opening of the
Grand River Center in Dubuque. The Grand River Center is Dubuque,
Iowa's river front conference and convention center, a state
of the art architectural and multimedia masterpiece for the
21st Century. It's one of the jewels in the crown that we
call the America's River Project that includes the National
Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, the Grand Harbor Hotel
and Water Park, and a growing list of amenities along the
riverfront in Dubuque.

Starbucks
Coffee Bar at the Kehl Center, Clarke College
November
2003
Clarke
Communication Student Meghan Hackett helped shoot this video!
Did you
see those cookies featured in this movie clip? The macadamia
nut and white chocolate number? And what about those biscotti's?
You know that biscotti in Italian means "twice baked?"
That leads us to our next bit of interesting information about
this new campus coffee bar at Clarke College... they do
their own baking. Well, we've always known Clarke was
a culinary hotbed with a tradition of excellence and the best
college catering service in town, and it's great to know they
are maintaining this tradition. The Starbucks Coffee Bar is
the latest example of an interesting on-campus phenomenon
on our nation's college's, the presence of brand-name franchises.
It's a great move for the schools (i.e. revenue stream) and
a great opportunity for large companies like Starbucks to
build brand loy | |
