They have big screen TVS, plasmas, LCDs, projectors, audio systems that could turn your entire home into a boom box, local area and wireless networks, and just about anything that you don't want to mess with. Remember when you tried to hook up your stereo and you almost strangled yourself on the sub-woofer cable? Yeah, that time. |

BioLife is a plasma and blood products collection facility that collects plasma product from volunteers and manufactures dozens of blood therapy products for a long list of medical conditions. The facility's parent company is Baxter, a legendary medical supply and service business. The facility is located at Medical Associates Park (not far from the MA Clinic's West End building. We managed to meet the management team and we took a tour of this fine new business in our community. Click the button and enjoy a fabulous local jazz quartet that entertained at the ribbon cutting. We provided a bonus of several minutes of this talented group of musicians on the video. |

This venerable and vibrant business has made a name for itself in downtown Dubuque for many years, and now it's under new ownership. Meet this charming Dubuque family that now owns one of the most popular one-stop shops for brides and prom dates. There's some bonus material here with Kevin Lynch (President of the Chamber and host of the show) and Shannon Gaherty, one of our funnier Dubuque Ambassadors. You'll love it.

Okay, imagine going out to eat with a group of your buds, and you pick the wine, pick your favorite items from a terrific menu, and wham, you cook the meal! No, this is not a party at your house. It's a party at Cookin' Something Up, a new cook-it-yourself super kitchen in which the dining experience includes cooking lessons if you're so inclined. Heck this would be fun if you actually knew how to cook. Wouldn't it bee cool to round up a bunch of your girlfriends (or the guys), and make a night of it? We know what you're thinking... futons? Aren't they for college kids with limited space and even more limited funds? That's what we thought, but we were wrong! Imagine a custom futon in mission style solid oak with a nice Dirk Van Erp replica lamp... Oooooo... very Frank Lloyd Wright! This young man who owns the place actually worked his way through college selling and now he builds futons. Hence the name, Custom Futons. It's a family business to be sure, and the family is utterly charming. These ain't your parent's futons, my friend. Check out the video. |

For those of you up on your downtown development, you most assuredly know the name Gronan. The Gronens are developers of residential and commercial properties that fully utilize the existing historical dwellings and structures that, quite frankly, many other developers don't mess with. Sure it's easier building something from scratch and it may make better economic sense. But the Gronens are experts at making it work with historic buildings and structures with character. The Kehl's and the Babkas were on hand to help christen their marvelous philanthropic venture at the Kehl Diabetes Center on the Finley Hospital campus. There was a tremendous list of dignitaries on hand for festivities, and it was a double ceremony. Downstairs in the conference center we cut one ribbon, and the went upstairs in the Babka Diabetes Education, Fitness and Diet Center (with teaching kitchen and fitness equipment), to cut the other ribbon. As we say in the Ambassadors, a "double cutter." |

First of all, everyone was required to wear little blue booties on this cold wintry day, and everyone complied. It was a brand spankin' new store out on Dubuque's West End on US 20, and it was spacious and beautiful. Gorgeous dresses and tuxedos, shoes, purses, and a lovely Paris-style runway where a bride can show styles to family and friends who usually come along anyway. These lovely sisters decided that this was the best business for them. and judging by the first impression when you walk in the door, they have a formula for success. |

This popular eye doctor has not only opened his own place. He helped design the building that you see on the hill on Cedar Cross Road just up from East Dubuque Saving Bank. We got the royal tour from the glasses racks to the examining rooms, and it was utterly fascinating. January 2007
Joey's Seafood Restaurant and Grill is either a festidiously accurate hologram of an authentic New England seafood restaurant projected here by some space alien technology, or it's an authentic New England Seafood restaurant that was miraculously transplanted from back East to Asbury Plaza. Who says there isn't such a thing as magic? One trip to Joey's Seafood and Grill will make you a believer. We cut the ribbon on this new franchise with a bevy of Red Coats who can't pass up free samples. No sooner than the ribbon hit the floor and we had a party. But afterall, that's what we do. Somebody has to do it. Besides, we bring the big scissors.

January 2007
Get ready for this. Sam's Club knows how to organize a ribbon cutting. They had a stage, a lectern, and 165 cheering employees lining both sides of the entrance. Add to this a magnificent color guard provided by the American Legion and a superb young tenor singing the National Anthem (the air handling unit in the entryway actually sounded like a chorus of snare drums quiety rolling while the young man from Clarke College's Music Department sang). Needless to say, our goose bumps had goosebumps, and it wasn't because it was cold and snowing. Iowa born and bred Chad Parker is the manager of Sam's Club, and he really put on a show with his management team. And the whole experience of shopping at a Sam's Club is an experience that may be as American as it gets. Free samples (coffee and biscotti were delicious), insanely great deals, smiling faces, and a jillion square feet of well-lighted retail space. Quick, grab that huge vessle of cheesy puffs and that bale of Huggies, we've got shopping to do!

| Grand Opera House Ribbon Cutting Ceremony |

January 2007
The Grand Opera House is a magnificent structure that has played host to the biggest names in show business history. Now it's making new history as a lovingly restored community theater facility thanks to the efforts of the Grand Opera House Foundation. The project is not finished, of course (there are still other capital improvements they would like to add), but that's what's wonderful about a grand facility such as this... it's a community work in process. There's no business like show business, and there's no show business without businesses. The Cottingham and Butlers, the Telegraph Heralds, the John Deere's and many other businesses in the community have supported this mammoth effort over the years, and from our perspective it was worth every penny. Curtain! Watch this video. It's 35 minutes, but takes you on a complete tour of the facility top to bottom. And we meet the new Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Molly Grover who sings a song on the back end of the video. It's hilarious. She can sing! December 2006
Katy bar the door. What a business concept for that splendid office space out on Pennsylvania Ave just west of the Northwest Arterial. It is Women's Health Center and West Side Fitness. The two businesses are actually linked, and for good reason. Health and medical services combined with fitness practically make this a one-stop-shop for a healthy lifestyle, don't you think?
So this was a double ribbon cutting... not the first time we've done a double header, and it went off perfectly with Keven Lynch doing the master of ceremonies duties. |

December 2006
There's this company very close to Dickyville on the new highway that you simply must visit if you're in the market for flooring, cabinets, carpeting or custom woodwork of any kind. It's the Wisconsin Woodworks, and they are celebrating a business anniversary, and they joined the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce. We decided to join them on this auspicious occasion (yes the Ambassadors celebrate significant anniversaries that companies are successful enough to reach). What was a highlight of this trip to Dickeyville was the tour of the manufacturing floor of this company. They make a lot of custom cabinets, and their shop is impressive. MC for this extravaganza was non other than Rusty Knight. He did an admirable job. |

The Johnson Brothers (twins... yes, twins), started this paper a few years ago, and now it's growing in a new headquarters on the second floor of a fine old building on Bluff Street in the historic Fourth Street Neighborhood. The office, like their newspaper, is very interesting. :Polished natural wood floors, exposed brick walls, a perfect blend of the old and the new. The Johnson Brothers are a talented and resourceful pair. Their paper is distributed weekly over a very wide Tri-State area. Pick one up... they're free at all kinds of dining establishments, night spots, stores of every sort. |

It's always fun video taping these events at a busy store. First, where do you set up with a crowd of shoppers, onlookers, customers coming and going, and your squad of Dubuque Chamber Ambassadors? So as you're filming, customer are walking in front of the camera or wandering in wondering what the heck is going on. It's always fun. U.S. Cellular just moved and expanded their store in Dubuque, and it is an extremely busy place. As we were doing speeches, listening to dignitaries, and cutting the ribbon, the store's manager was worried if customers were being helped. Now that's a successful enterprise! Don't you love it. Join Kevin Lynch, Kim Tully, Mayor Roy Buol and the whole gang at the grand opening of U.S. Cellular's new headquarters in Dubuque. |

It's an uptown gallery but it's downtown... in the growing Historic Main Street District. In the old Weber Paper Building and now the Platinum Building, Upstart Crow is not only a Gallery of fine regional art including glass and some three dimensional art, but they are a frame shop specializing in conservation framing and innovative techniques. Occupying the first floor right hand side of the building, the space is large with high beamed ceilings, and spectacular lighting, this facility will showcase some of the finest artists in our region. One of the top local wildlife artists is here. You'll have to see the tape. It's awe inspiring. |
| StyleMaster's Salon and Spa on University Ave. |

November 2006
Get ready to laugh. This is Stylemasters Salon and Spa's Grand Opening tape and it's a riot. If this tape is funny, it may be a good indication how enjoyable this place could be to relax and get your hair cut and styled not to mention your body messaged, your nails done, or your feet buffed, polished and pedicured. We think it's important to enjoy the people who are working on you. What is unique about this place in the historic retail district at the top of University Ave. (once known as the Avenue Top Neighborhood), is it actually occupies two addresses not adjoining one another. It's a little unusual, but it lends some charm to the enterprise. The spa is located about two doors down from the hair salon. It works. Wait till you see this tape. The last part of it, filmed at the spa, is the camera just left on to record all the fun and frivolity. |
| Steve's Ace Hardware on Kennedy Road Newly Remodeled |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
December 2006
This is your videographer, Gary Olsen, speaking to you. I love this store. Steve's Ace Hardware is an incredible store on Kennedy Road just south of Pennsylvania Ave., and they have evolved as the retail landscape changed in Dubuque. About a year ago, Steve and his family expanded their store to include a small engine equipment business featuring Stihl products and certified service (top of the line), and now they've moved that business into the main store to expand the offerings to customers and give them a little more elbow room. They effectively remodeled and reorganized the entire space. What is unique about this business, begun by Steve who actually grew up nearby in the neighborhood, is that he knows many customers want an expert to help them with their buying decision, and they want excellent service available at all times. This distinguishes Steve's Ace from the discount boxes and sideliners and its been a success formula that works. |
| Steve & Barry's at Kennedy Mall |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
December 2006
This was a very funny ribbon cutting. All the arrangements were obviously made by the corporate headquarters of this incredibly fast-growing retailer that has now located a store in our own venerable Kennedy Mall. When our legion of Dubuque Chamber Ambassadors descended upon the place with cameras rolling and certificate in hand, they were surprised to see us! No matter. The young management team swung into action, cleared away the displays in the front of the store, and we had a ribbon cutting that was befitting a store that will no doubt be a favorite of every citizen in Dubuque under the age of 35. But upon close examination of the tape, you'll see that customers span all ages. It was, after all, Christmas shopping season in full swing. |
| SGO Decorative Glass on Historic Main Street in Dubuque |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
November 2006
This is one of the most interesting videos on the page because this business is interesting. SGO Decorative Glass makes custom stained glass windows. They also do restorative work, custom architectural glass, and they can take an original piece of art and turn it into a leaded window. But this isn't like traditional stained glass. One of the big differences is that they use tempered and even insulated glass if required. Traditional stained glass windows can be an enormous and expensive energy consumer. Anyhow, this process involves the use of a computer plotter that has been specially modified, and graphic software that the designer uses to design and actually cut the overlay material that bonds to the glass. It's remarkable, ingenious, actually. There are impressive samples throughout the retail space which is in the Historic Main Street District just down the street from Cafe Mana Java and Bricktown. |
| The River Wall at the Port of Dubuque Dedication Ceremony |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
November 2006
You know it's always been a challenge commemorating all who have donated something to a great monument. In this case it was the Port of Dubuque which included the River Walk, the riverfront gazebo, and all that is represented by riverfront improvements in the Ice Harbor area that extends to the Star Brewery. Well, the City of Dubuque, in league with the Dubuque Historical Society, came up with the perfect commemoration. The River Wall, which is part of the establish Flood Wall, but which contains a magnificent photographic mural of the river and superimposed on the face are the names of individuals and businesses. When you view the wall from a distance, you see this magnificent "window" on the river which is actually the mural depicting the opposite bank including a fishing boat lazily cruising by. But when you get closer, the wonderful optical illusion is revealed, and you see the names. There's a metaphor here somewhere if you take time to figure it out. |
| Radio Shack Remodeling on Dodge Street |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
November 2006
Have you been following Radio Shack's fortunes in the financial publications? You know that this is still one of the strongest retailers in small electronics in the world. They are fast on their feet, and they watch their customers' buying habits accurately anticipating what they will need next. One of the big trends is accessories for things like IPods, but the real success has been cellular communications. That's because Radio Shack supports what they sell and they have Radio Shacks all over the country. So the store on Dodge Street next to Target has undergone serious remodeling. They now have flat screen TV and theater audio systems, but they still are the place to go for that adapter that will split your headphones from your portable DVD player so you and your girlfriend can listen to the movie together on an airplane. And batteries? Holy cow do they have the batteries (top rated by Consumer Reports), and power conversion units, and every kind of cable, wire, and coupling you'll ever need. Oh, and did we mention the stuff you never thought you needed? They have plenty of that, too. |
| Mr. Electric on John Deere Road in Dubuque |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
November 2006
Mr. Electric is an incredibly easy-to-remember name is it not? Well, that's precisely the idea. If you're an established homeowner, who are you going to call for your electrical needs? Many electrical contractors in the area are so busy servicing the new housing and commercial construction market, nobody seems to have time to install that ceiling fan you wanted to put in your bedroom. And what about the price? That's the point behind this friendly and accessible franchise. You'll hear more about this Mr. Electric and you'll no doubt see their colorful trucks in your neighborhood. Give them a call and wait no longer for that ceiling fan installation! Maybe Mr. Electric (the mascot) will pay a visit. Shannon Gaherty talks with the mascot above left. She's a stitch in this video, by the way. |
| Liberty Bank Ground Breaking in East Dubuque, Illinois |

Photos are linked to enlargements. |
December 2006
Rob Apel, the manager of Liberty Bank, announced an important milestone event for his bank and East Dubuque, Illinois. Approximately south of the middle of Sinsinawa Avenue, ED's "Main Street," is a large vacant lot that was once Van's Liquor Store. Now it's going to be a brand new banking facility, and that signals a new era of business for the city that once was known more for its joints and bars than its commerce. But East Dubuquers are proud of their city, and officials showed up in force to welcome Liberty Bank's project. As the city grows in population (and it has a great school district, by the way), a new pride and imperative has taken hold of East Dubuque, and it will be interesting to see how this all comes together in the years to come. |

Hy-Vee Asbury has just completed their $1.5 million dollar expansion to their store which includes a beverage, wine and spirits store, a baby store, office supplies, a gourmet teaching kitchen and club room for parties and cooking classes. This is where the famous Kids in the Kitchen cable television show is filmed, and the room is completely broadcast ready with lighting, sound, and a 16 foot counter with Jenn-Air grill range, three ovens, a microwave, dishwasher, and a mirror overhead to allow cameras and the audience to peer into pots and pans during demonstrations. Pretty neat. Congratulations Chuck Donnelly and company on a fabulous new investment. |
| The Goldmoor Inn in Galena, Illinois |

|
December 2006
One of the highest rated inns in Illinois is the Goldmoor Inn, located on Blackjack Road between Galena and Chestnut Mountain Ski Resort. It's a fabulous and dare we say romantic spot along the Mississippi River. We arrived late afternoon to a spectacular red sunset. You've got to see this place to believe it. We but the ribbon on their new restaurant and banquet rooms addition, and it is first rate. You can even arrange a dinner in the kitchen, complete with candle light and you can watch the chef prepare each course for you. What a great time. Of course there are the quiet romantic corners of the restaurant where proposals are made, apparently. This could be among the most romantic destinations in the Tri-States. |
| Crescent Health Center in Dubuque |

November 2006
The Crescent Health Center, located in the a rehabilitated block that once housed a casket manufacturing company is now a wonderful health clinic in which no one will be turned away who is without insurance. This was one of the top 10 Envision projects that percolated among Dubuque citizens this past year, and already the clinic is a reality. Complete health care services will be offered including eye doctors, dentists, OB-Gyn, pediatrics, and a host of specialties. The facility was made possible through the leadership of such businesses in Dubuque as Crescent Electric, the DRA, and countless citizens who got on this bandwagon and drove it home. |

The decor and lighting are lovely in this space including privacy and a great lineup of hair care, skin products and makeup make this a complete destination of relaxation and beauty from head to toes. |

Yup, that's a bag piper above. This film, produced by Ambassador Gary Olsen, captured this moment with the bagpiper and used the music in the sound track. Iit was most appropriate. A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing is a firm with a 150 year history in Dubuque. In fact, A.Y.'s history is Dubuque's history. The Scottish immigrant founded a company that grew into a formidable force in the cast valve and pump industry. To celebrate the occasion of the firm's anniversary, the company decided to do something that would last. They donated and dedicated a river front park to the city of Dubuque. The plaque is magnificent, made of bronze and native limestone quarried from the bluffs along the Mississippi River. The amenities of the park include a fishing pier, playground, plantings and jogging, walking biking paths. |

Within two months we go from a ground breaking to a ribbon cutting on the new Dubuque Bike and Hike Trail located along the Northwest Arterial. The paved pathway was largely paid for by state funds, and it is part of the growing network of trails in Dubuque that will eventually connect all bike trails with the Heritage Trail north of Dubuque. This is a funny video because we go from warm weather to bitterly cold weather in the same video. Mayor Buol shows up in a light sport coat for the ribbon cutting, and we had to defrost him after the ceremony since he could no longer talk. That's not good for a mayor. |
